. this is the newtown united methodist church and where a lot of the media are camped out. they give preschool classes, ages two to six, sadly some of those kids have died there's the church behind me. it's been opened now for 24 hours. it's going to be open 24 hours for as long as they need it here. some of the members of that church died and anyone who wants to come by and pay their respects to the people who died, anyone who needs help from this church, they can come here and get it. after this shooting inside sandy hook elementary school, the safety issue will now be front and center at schools across the country. do classrooms need to be changed into panic rooms or as i've been saying earlier, can we make classrooms into mini prisons? it seems like what we may have to make our schools in order to be safe. i want to bring in lou palumbo. he is a former police officer and now the director of a lead intelligence based security firm some schools already have roaming officers, metal detectors, officers roaming the hallways. what can we do to make our schools safer? do we need all of these measures in
's go to jason carroll at the newtown united methodist church. that church has provided a spir out tether of sorts for a community awash in grief. what role does this church play today? >> reporter: well very important role this morning and this is where the church is going to be ringing the bell 2 times. everyone in the community is going to be listening as that happens. it's an ancient ritual that's taken place over decades. it used to be traditionally a call to worship but today as you know it's a call to remember. three pastors will take turns ringing the bell 28 times. i spoke to one of the pastors, past oor jane sibley. this is very personal for her. it's especially personal to pastor sibley, her family is directly connected to the school and she had an important message she wanted to get out to the survivors living here in newton. >> my grandsons give me the joy of being able to laugh for a moment and i'm refusing to allow that -- >> reporter: chase kowalski, one of the little boys who died in the shooting, went to this church here and his mother apparently, carol, has been
words. reverend matthew krebin, the senior minister of the newtown congressional church, united church of christ, he will open up. i had an opportunity to meet with him at his church yesterday and you see some of the clergy there, including the rabbi who is there as well. you see him wearing the skull cap with his back to us. he and reverend krebbin, they were both inside the fire hall where all the families gathered, the governor was there, dannel malloy, and at one point the governor started telling family members, parents, who was alive and who wasn't alive, and, you know, and both the minister and the rabbi said to me, it was one -- it was the most powerful moment, the shock, and these are clergy, they're supposed to comfort. they didn't know what to do. >> these parents, they did not know, they were waiting, hoping, seeing children come out and hoping that one of those children would be theirs, but for so many parents that didn't happen, and the governor was the one, you heard this morning, wolf, that ultimately told them, conveyed that information, that horrible information to th

the case for armed police officers in every single school in the united states, elementary school, middle school, junior high, high school. wayne lapierre, the head of the national rifle association, saying there needs to be armed security this week after that horrible tragedy at the newtown elementary school. he comes forward with this proposal, police officers, protective plan, in his words, for every single school in the united states. then you heard assay hutchinson, the former republican congressman, former official of the department of homeland security, saying that they are getting ready to gear up to help schools all across the united states get armed guards in every single school. he didn't make a case for any significant gun control, as the president of the united states did the other day when he asked joe biden, the vice president, to come up with some ideas on how to strengthen the laws to deal with gun violence in the united states. you did hear wayne lapierre make the case that there should be greater restrictions on violent video games, maybe some better mental health issue

>>> hello. i'm wolf blitzer. i'm coming to you with live special coverage from newtown, connecticut, the scene of the horrific elementary school massacre. we want to welcome back our viewers in the united states and around the world. we're learning new information about this mass killing here in connecticut and we're learning new information about the people who were killed. 26 people shot inside the elementary school. 20 of them children. at a news conference just a little while ago here in newtown, the connecticut state police said that all of the victims now have been identified. they will be released -- they will be releasing the name shortly. we're told to be standing by. all of the bodies have been removed and they've been taken to the medical examiner's office. crime scene investigators are working around the clock. here's how they are trying to deal with what's going on. investigators say -- they spoke out a few moments ago. >> we still have major crime detectives and newtown detectives working at the scene at the school. that is not completed. that probably will not be comp

, as it gets to work. ♪ cisco. tomorrow starts here. >>> throughout newtown, connecticut, teddy bears, the candles, pictures of christmas trees, they were displayed everywhere in remembrance of the victims who lost their lives in the shooting massacre at sandy hook elementary. the community united during the holiday to support the families of the victims who are grieving. 20 children, 7 adults killed on december 14th. the memorials remembering them are here to stay, we have learned. an official announced a special plan by the city to convert the memorial, here is part of what this city official told residents. the thousands of flowers, letters and prayers, the signs and photos, teddy bears and more will be gathered and processed into soil that will serve in the foundation of a future permanent memorial to honor the slain children and adults. officials say it will be a sacred memorial. the items will be collected and converted starting this week. >>> now, new information on that tragic shooting in upstate new york on christmas eve. two firefighters were shot and killed. two others were
